Garden Theft Brings Community Together

There is nothing a thief will not steal, and that includes plants and trees. The Narrows Botanical Gardens in Brooklyn was virtually ruined after thieves broke in and stole thousands of dollars in plants, bonsai tree, and terra cotta planters on April 22nd. The devastating theft dampened the spirits of those who ran the garden as well as the hundreds of people who enjoyed the peace and tranquility the garden offered.

Community members were shocked by the desecration but refused to accept the destruction the thieves wrought on their treasured garden. Members of the community took it upon themselves to restore the beautiful community garden to its original splendor.

Several landscaping business and nurseries in the area donated plants, flowers and trees to the restoration cause. Home gardeners did their part by donating what they could. Most importantly, people were willing to get their hands dirty and help plant and cultivate the generous donations.

The landscaper for the Narrows Garden, Jimmy Johnson, was overwhelmed with the generosity of his fellow community members. An event that started out as a tragedy ended up being one of the greatest triumphs any community can experience. The camaraderie shown is an inspiration to the millions of communities around the country that find themselves in similar situations.
